SEED Lab member Jennifer Briggs, and Shannon Wanless are investigating early childhood Race Related Teaching Practices (RRTP) in 9 prekindergarten classrooms. They have spent the 2015-16 academic year collecting 162 hours of classroom observations, 9 teacher interviews, and teacher and parent questionnaires to get a better sense of ways that teachers intentionally or unintentionally send messages to children about their race, and meanings associated with being in a racial group. Data collection ended in June 2016 and analysis is underway. Preliminary results, based on the first month of data collection are included in this report on Positive Racial Identity Development. A description of ways that RRTPs can include picture book reading can be found in this Young Children article, co-authored with Dr. Patricia Crawford, a children’s literature expert from the University of Pittsburgh.
